Add hope 🙏🏼

Magic Johnson once said “All kids need is a little help, a little hope and somebody who believes in them”. From his mouth to the ears of the incredible souls at KFC
KFC’s Add Hope – now in its seventh year – has found a powerful way to unite staff and customers in the fight against hunger. Add Hope partners with over 110 beneficiary organisations to feed over 110 000 children every day across the country, helping them learn, grow and thrive.

With World Hunger Month having kicked off in October, Add Hope continues to shine a spotlight on hunger issues in South Africa and the beneficiaries it supports.

In the second leg of their World Hunger Month roadshow, Add Hope visited Home of Hope in Tableview, Cape Town with local media and KFC team members from surrounding stores. We began the day with an introduction from resident social worker, Bianca Breytenbach on the home and the kind of children they support.

Home of Hope specialises in supporting children who have been affected by Fetal Alchohol Syndrome (FAS), a condition developed by a mother consuming alcohol during pregnancy which results in various disorders.

Home of Hope houses children ranging from new-borns to 18 year olds, who are fed three nutritious meals and two snacks daily at their Table View home. Guests were then entertained by beautiful singing and dancing from the children and were then shown a tour of the grounds where they were able to see where the children live, sleep, learn and play.

As a patron of KFC this is just one example of physically seeing where your R2 donation goes to. The Add Hope initiative provides us all with opportunity to be able to make a real difference in the lives of children across South Africa.

What a heartwarming feeling knowing you’ve given hope and so much more to someone less fortunate that yourself  – Kudos to KFC & Add Hope.

To find out more, visit Add Hope #AddHope and visit Home of Hope if you’d like to assist further.
Until next time remember that together we can save lives & Add Hope.

Fall For Winter

Its Fashion Friday so what better way to end off the work day than with a Fashion Blog!

FALL FOR WINTER – Where style meets architectural design: Winter 2016

This winter 2016 Zando.co.za enthuses design with a militant inspired edge, specifically curated to bring out the bold and celebrate the cold.  Winter 16’s absolute fashion focus will leave you feeling polished and ready for runway battle.

zando1

An Apocalyptic Gaze

In complete contrast to Free Fall’in, Fall for Winter ’16 relies heavily on the natural architectural balance provided by the shoot landscape. Strong lines create a geometric distinction between illustrious rolling hills and linear form.

“Structural minimalism with a naturally lush setting established the perfect foundation for our W’16 shoot. The texturally rich backdrop lent itself to each trend without disruption, enabling each look to form an identity of its own.”  Zeane Singer- Zando Fashion Editor

Nothing says iconic insignia like a cosy sweater and a classic fedora with a muted yet monochromatic palette. Fall for Winter ’16 perfectly pairs with a seductive knee high heel, tasselled ankle boot or athletic sneak, depending on the style best suited for your style needs.

 Furget Me Not

This season’s offerings are an amalgamation of evolutionary pieces. Playful in nature and bundled with layered colourways – expect rolled necks, detailed ankle boots or eye catching prints and statement sleeves. Bold maximalist apparel and voluminous elegance are the flavours for this winters spell.

“It’s a faux party this season! From fur, to leather or suede – this trend is making its round internationally as well as locally. Find your fit in a figure flattering dress, jacket or skirt.” Amanda Lepar – Senior Buyer, Zando Women’s Apparel

Key must have’s for Winter ’16 include a statement roll neck knit in nude, a polo neck bodysuit and an off-the-shoulder long sleeve dress.

Styled to Perfection

Zando Fashion Editor, Zeane Singer breaks down Winter ’16 into 3 prominent categories.

  •  Luxe Movement

Juxtaposed classic elements combine with luxury for this Athletic-Leisure-wear look. Accentuate your favourite knits with an over-sized bomber or biker jacket and slouched denims for the ultimate relaxed feel.

  • Kaliedofolk

Ethereal romance inspired by the seventies. This winter’s bohemian flair oozes femininity in its deep tones, rich textures, amid intricate detailing’s of tassels, ruffles and floral flirty prints.

  • Shadow Chic

Lustful offerings layered with decadent applique, fine knits, boastful booties, and quilted jackets that are sure to keep your cosy classy. Keep your stockings high and your skirts faux.

Until next time remember the forecast, cold weather, hot fashion!

GrandWest takes Kensington Home for the Aged under its wing

William Wordsworth once said “The wiser mind mourns less for what age takes away than what it leaves behind.”

In a world where so much emphasis is placed on youth & material wealth, it is so refreshing & heartwarming to see a company like GrandWest investing in & caring about our aged!

I was truly sad to have (at the last minute) missed the incredible moment when Grand Parade Investment, GrandWest & Miss SA arrived at the Kensington Home for the Aged last week, with love, appreciation, time & care packs for the residents of this home. If like me, you missed the event, you can fortunately read all about what GrandWest is doing for Kensington – its truly a Motivating & Inspiring Monday post!

GrandWest takes Kensington Home for the Aged under its wing

Improving comfort and safety for the residents of the Kensington Home for the Aged were the objectives of the extensive refurbishment project that has just been completed by GrandWest’s Social Economic Development Department in collaboration with BBBEE suppliers of GrandWest.

image1

The project, started in January 2016, included installing dry walling in the Home’s Hassen Adams Frail Care Centre, electrical refurbishments, installing additional showers, grab rails and shower sheets, repainting the centre and the installation of blinds. The 10 rooms in the frail care centre were refreshed with new décor and also received new cupboards, side bed lamps and linen. The reception area was revamped with a new couch and reception desk, while outside, new paving will be laid, along with a carport for the ambulance and automated gates commencing July 2016. Since its inception, a total of R450 000 has been donated towards Kensington Home’s building refurbishments.

Prior to the refurbishment project, the GrandWest Social Economic Development Department made it possible for five of the home’s staff to undergo training with St John’s to ensure that they are adequately skilled for their demanding roles as caregivers.

The home provides shelter, medical support and a nurturing, supportive environment for about 110 aged and infirm people from previously disadvantaged communities. Many of the residents do not have any family and have limited means to support themselves. The home relies heavily on the donations and sponsorships it receives from the public to continue operating as the Pension and Social Welfare Subsidy it receives is not sufficient.

“The elderly are sadly often amongst the most neglected and forgotten members of our society and much can be said about a community by the way in which it treats its elderly citizens. Kensington Home for the Aged provides invaluable care and support to the elderly, many of whom have nowhere else to turn,” says Heidi Edson, Group Social Economic Development Manager for Sun International.

image2“The Home’s commitment to ensuring a safe, nurturing and healthy environment for its residents is heartening. We recognise the challenges they face in keeping the facility up and running. As such, we are pleased to be in a position to assist the home in addressing some of these challenges. This project, which involved one of our enterprise development partners, Decordent Living, demonstrated what can be achieved when caring people work together,” says Edson.

In 2015, GrandWest’s Social Economic Development Department visited the Home and identified various needs. A fire detection system was installed to the value of R255 000  and staff were given training on using fire extinguishers. During the winter of 2015, GrandWest teamed up with The Table Bay to donate warm accessories such as gloves and beanies as well as blankets to help alleviate some of the burden on the Home in keeping its residents warm and comfortable. The items were handed to the residents by Miss South Africa 2015, Liesl Laurie, much to the residents’ delight.

Later in the year, SHAWCO Health (the University of Cape Town’s Students’ Health and Welfare Centres Organisation) visited the home. The visit, facilitated by GrandWest which is a primary sponsor of SHAWCO Health, saw 19 students from the Physiotherapy, Audiology and Speech-Language faculties engage with the home’ residents in a range of activities focused on uplifting their spirits.
SHAWCO Health plans to host further group therapy sessions at the home in 2016 as well as offer training to the nurses and caregivers to assist them in managing the residents’ diagnoses more effectively.

Until next time, we all too often forget about these pillars of our society, so lets hope this little reminder has you inspired to Be The Change too!

PopIn-to this beautiful collaboration!

THE STORY OF THE POP IN SHOP WITH VOICES CLUB AND JO CARLIN

So I was guttered to have missed this incredible collaboration between these two powerhouses, but here’s what this new creative & beautiful space in Cape Town is all about!

VOICES Female Business Club, a professional networking club, has joined in collaboration with Jo Carlin in Cape Town to launch a unique and beautiful collaboration space in the heart of De Waterkant.

This striking 200+ sqm gorgeous design space has been the home for Jo Carlin design for over 5 years and is well known as the only stop for stunning contemporary furniture which can be tailor made to particular customer requirements as well as the quirky Jo Carlin character female fashion

Shelley Humphreys, the founder of VOICES last year May was searching for a new creative space for the club members to utilize and work and which “evokes a creative energy and inspiration for new ideas and motivation which is often sorely lacking in many co-working spaces currently offered”

Image

The new collaboration working space offers a comfortable and beautiful lounge environment, with Jo Carlin’s striking furniture designs and art pieces on the walls creating a warm, comfortable environment with high ceilings exuding space to think, breathe and create.

Jo comments “The idea of collaborating with VOICES was very attractive as I view myself as a creative female and enjoy being in the company of others with a similar energy and outlook. This collaboration will bring new energy and creativity into the space and I’m very excited to see what will happen”

The PopInShop was an idea born from both Carlin and Humphreys who believed that other high end designers could benefit and add to the energy and creativity in the space.

They created the concept and are joined for the launch by another 4 international designers who will offer their products to the space, including:

Mani Bains – an award winning Denim Designer originally from the UK with over 15 yrs experience being the lead designer for Levi’s, EVISU, Wrangler and Tommy Hilfiger and now for the past 2 years created a high end male and female denim collection, namely DIVA jeans and Kings of Denim.

Marlena Groengard Danish Designer and stylist whom have lived and worked in Copenhagen, Paris, Milan and New York offers MARA – beautifully designed jewellery, some with precious stones, and ostrich leather handbags.

Italian born Andrea Cisari will be presenting his iconic sunglass brand Ross & Brown an Italian eyewear brand established in 2013 with headquarters in London. Today, Ross & Brown products are sold in the most exclusive boutiques and finest optical stores all around the world.

British born Stuart Bishop will showcase his timepieces collection TRIDENT which are functional and minimalist in form, high regard for the principles of contemporary design and all with affordable prices.

POP2

Carlin and Humphreys are keen to keep the PopInShop story and shopping experience alive by including other designers into the space throughout the year, “we want to keep the customers engaged and coming back to see what’s new” comments Humphreys “we want to create an experience of inspirational purchasing with value and products not easily available at other retail outlets”.

The PopInShop is open for business Monday to Friday 9am-5pm and Saturdays 10am-1pm. Pop In and see us and join the collaboration.

So my weekend plans involve surrounding myself with beautiful pieces whilst taking a tour of this amazing space – keen to join me?

Until next time remember, Boss Chics don’t Compete…they Collaborate!

They will host a competition on the day for the best pinup gal, so all the bombshells are encouraged to put their best fashion foot forward.

The Betties will also be recruiting pinups for the Miss Bombshell Betty 2016 competition to be held at The Dusty Rebels and The Bombshells festival on the 12 November 2016 in Cape Town.

As usual, a number of live bands will also be in attendance, these will be released mid April so keep watch this space. Utopia at the Mall of Africa

If heaven had a shopping center, I’d imagine it would look similar to the most talked about Mall in South Africa – The Mall of Africa

Today saw the fabulous opening of this anticipated mall with everything from sand art to celebrities, from Master Chef winning meals to renowned DJs and alluring fashion to queues of shoppers for kilometers.

This impressive shopping center boasts 130 000m2 of retail space, 2.4kms of shopping for every brand your heart desires, with a design, inspired from Africa’s geological features & iconic landscapes, leaves you in total awe!

Whether walking through the Forest Walk  Court (think Congos amazing rain forest), slowing down at the Desert Court (picture desert regions in North Africa), looking to relax at the Court of Great Lakes (imagine the Great Lakes of Africa), grabbing a glass of bubbly at the Champagne Bar at the Crystal Court (picture diamonds, crystals & precious minerals), or pampering at the Oleum Court (taking inspiration from trade & oil wealth in Africa), this prestigious Mall has something to suit each & every taste.

With 6500 parking bays & 24 entrances, finding the most loved & lusted after local & international brands makes this the ultimate shopping experience. Free wifi is sure to put smiles on every shoppers face (as it did to all bloggers & media today)  & the convenience of dedicated über pick up zones is certainly a win if like me, finding the prefect parking spot is always a challenge.

You will find this R5bn mall at Lone Creek & Magwa Crescent, Waterfall City in Midrand. Stores open from Monday to Saturday 9am to 8pm, Sundays & Public holidays 10am to 8pm. On that note, enjoy the long weekend shopping up a storm at the Mall of Africa & please share your thoughts on the experience & your latest purchases too with me here.

Whilst I drool over the latest at Zara Home, The Kooples and Armani Exchange, only 3 of the 300 stores at Mall of Africa, I’m thinking I like my money where I can see it..In my closet 😉

Whiskey in a teacup

Dignified vs Youthful, Soft vs Firm, Dry vs Sweet, Big vs Subtle, Austere vs Rich..

Perhaps Creamy, Nutty, Spicey, Woody or Balanced, Phenolic, Hot…
These were a few of the descriptions used by our dashing Whisky connoisseur on the evening Protea Fire & Ice Cape Town & Johnnie Walker hosted us for one of the first Women’s Whiskey Tasting.

When I thought whiskey it used to be beautiful glasses, expensive cigars, leather furniture & dark wood in rooms hosting the most distinguished of gentleman..however this evening saw beautiful, confident women, dressed to impressive & surrounded by bottles on the best that Johnnie Walker had to offer!

We were treated to a brief history of fermentation & whiskey & thereafter guided on howto savor this bold drink. We started with a welcome drink of Johhnie Walker Black double with ginger ale & apple juice – yum!

The next drink was

Fashion Friday – Diesel Concept Store V&A Waterfront

The first of many #FashionFriday posts to come!

A few weeks ago the eagerly anticipated Diesel brand chose the V&A Waterfront to debut its new retail design concept in South Africa. This new concept was designed in collaboration with Japanese architect firm Wonderwall and Diesel Artistic Director Nicola Formichetti.

Store design features include a wooden engineered floor, customized chandeliers and Foscarini lamps. Luxurious brown, black and white leather combined with industrial black metal fixtures in various finishes, perfectly highlight the contrast between antique and technologically advanced features of the store. It is the perfect expression of the brand’s alternative to luxury positioning.

The store boasts a lavish seated area for customers to admire beautifully crafted footwear and accessories. State of the art fitting rooms create a tranquil yet premium ambience where customers are free to transform themselves.

Denim, Diesel’s core product, has various dedicated sections within the store, emphasizing the quality and mastery of the brand in this category. Striking denim walls display key styles and washes of the 5 pocket range, while the newly introduced Doctor Denim table showcase a selection of denim items and allow stylists to engage with customers on the features and benefits of the product. Movement and durability come together at the Jogg Jeans section, where you will find a cutting edge crossbreed between jeans and active wear. It’s evident that there are many touchpoints where one can experience the heritage and craftsmanship of Diesel denim, it is after all the ultimate in collectable fashion.

Says Renzo Rosso, Diesel’s founder: “I’m enthusiastic about the future-forward change the brand is spear-heading in retail.”

The creative team at 4 Elements Media added a local star-studded flair to the international brand! Guests included tattoo model Shane Burnell, artist Ana Kuni and stylist Sian Bianca Moss all wearing Diesel’s latest collection as well as actress Tanya van Graan, Afternoon Express Presenters Danilo Acquisto, Jeannie D singer Jimmy Nevis, TV Presenters Katlego Maboe & Tracy-Lee Rosslind.

Italian styled canapé food was served while Fleur du Cap provided the wines, and additional beverages were provided by Grant’s Whiskey & Hunters Extreme BOLD, as an added element to the event Diesel offered live tattooing by Gareth Doye Tattoos and a barber shop by Edge for Men as part of the experience.

ABOUT DIESEL:

Diesel is a fashion industry legend. A pioneer in the world of denim and casual wear, it has always remained both outside and ahead of trends. Never forsaking its original DNA, it has evolved into an iconic global lifestyle brand. Despite Diesel’s extraordinary growth, its philosophy is the same as when Renzo Rosso created it in 1978. He envisaged a brand that would stand for passion, individuality and self-expression. Today, Diesel continues to blaze its own trail. It is on a continuing mission to challenge the status quo, experiment with new ideas, innovate and provoke. http://www.diesel.com

Until next time remember Denim is a way of life!

FREE FALL’IN AW16

Zando’s exclusive brand offering gets you autumn ready!
This season Zando invites you to celebrate your fashion individuality – with a pinch of off-the-runway panache! Autumn Winter 16’s sheer fashion variation has a little something for everyone, leaving nothing to be desired.

Clean Cut Perfection…
“Transparency was the hard-hitting inspiration for Free Fall’in this AW16. I wanted the aesthetic to be clean and simple but not ‘clinical’, allowing the autumnal colours to pop against the white background. We used supporting props that screamed urban chic with a modern flare.” Zeane Singer – Zando Fashion Editor

Warm berry tones pop against a playful mix of white frames, block platforms and futuristic loungers. The clean cut lines depict a baron portrait, themed to allow apparel to take focal point. The collection perfectly pairs with a pixie boot, pointed heel or brogue flatforms.

Fall Enthused…

Taking inspiration from global street style and the compelling runways of Paris, London and New York, the Zando AW16 Utopia Collection explores a fierce yet classic approach to seasonal transition. With a strong emphasis on spiced hues and faux fur with a seasonal velvet touch – textures run dense and layered.

“There is strong international influence for AW16 with a number of trends which one can easily relate to. From graphic black and white, sizzling punk, folksy tribe, military and an eighties comeback, Free Fall’in on Zando holds the key to style variety and perfect personality match.” Amanda Lepar – Senior Buyer, Zando Women’s Apparel

With a strong emphasis on brand offering expansion, AW16 was built to not only highlight a stark colourway, but looked to incorporate a rich mosaic of florals and geometric pattern in order to amplify styling capability.

From the tasselled ankle or pixie boot to a basic and most delicate court heel, lace up brogue, or pistol boot, Free Fall’in ensures something for every kind of gal out on the town or hitting the office glam from head to toe.

And Who Are You?

Zando Fashion Editor, Zeane Singer breaks down the Fall Collection into 3 prominent categories:

Borrowed from the Boys

This look is strongly inspired by international street culture. We like to think of it as hipster meets fashionista with a tomboy finish. Create the look with ripped boyfriend jeans, cleated side buckle boots, a soft white blouse topped with a smokey eye and soft nude lip.

Dark Romance

This luxurious look speaks for itself, a chic silhouette with a sultry twist. Ideal for career chasers with a full social calendar. Think lace detailed dress finished with a black leather jacket, velvet tie up heels and a burgundy wrap blouse. Add a vibrant masala lip for that added pop.

Folksy

Folksy has a fierce 1970’s influence with a slightly softer tone for that ultimate transitional changeover. This girl has a youthful spirit and playful bohemian charm. Pair your curvy fit basic skinny with a suede waterfall jacket and fringe bag. Warning! Don’t leave the house without your neckerchief or round sunnies.
