Seat Safety – a blog for for the parents

Hello dear readers!

As you know, my blog includes anything that is of interest to me. So being involved in South African Motorsport and having a passion for 4 wheels I was recently informed by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists on something rather disturbing – something I had to share with you, especially if you are parents!

Wheel Well, a NPO doing amazing work in road safety shared the following with us. All parents want to protect their children as best they can. When it comes to child car safety, the correct child car seat can seem rather expensive and some parents may be tempted to choose a cheaper alternative. This had led to thousands of unsuspecting parents across the globe purchasing inexpensive “portable” car seat harnesses online.

These “cheaper” options offer parents a false sense of security and do not
help to prevent injury or death. Wheel Well are anxious to inform parents of the hazards of using this kind of device instead of a proper child car seat which conforms to EU regulations.

Authorities in the United Kingdom have conducted crash tests on cheaply made and untested “portable” car seat harnesses and the results are sobering. These cheap imported seats were shown to disintegrate at a low-speed collision of under 60kph,
propelling a crash test dummy into the front of the vehicle.

To put this in perspective, a normal child car seat is tested to survive impacts at speeds in excess of 100kph. With the huge forces involved in a car crash, parents must ensure they purchase car seats that adhere to current and tested regulations and standards.

In South Africa, we adhere to European standards and the car seat must feature an orange European Economic Commission stamp of approval sticker. Parents need to be aware that any defects and shortcomings of a car seat will become apparent during a crash … and that will be far too late!

Prevent a lifetime of regret and make sure you buy the correct and legal seat for your child. If you cannot afford a correctly certified car seat new, rather be in contact with Wheel Well on peggie@wheelwell.co.za

Please consider donating your old car seats to Wheel Well and if you have a car seat but are unsure if it meets the requirements, contact Peggie and get peace of mind. Do feel free to share this with other parents out there – spread safety!

Credits Girl About Town

Easy like Sunday morning…

The first of my restaurant reviews all for a great cause!!!

For every written review Stop Hunger Now SA and Eat Out donate a meal to someone less fortunate than you or I.

When I initially began my blog, Craft in Parkhurst was at the top of my list of restaurants to visit, before heading to the Mother City!
I finally tried it out & it was worth the wait 🙂 Very dear friends were out here for two weeks from the Gold Coast (Australia) & on the eve of their departure, we met for a breakfast at Craft.

Craft Restaurant, Parkhurst

Craft Restaurant, Parkhurst

Parkhurst is an incredibly trendy, alive & colourful suburb in Johannesburg – the perfect spot for a restaurant such a Craft.
No bookings are allowed so when I got there I was impressed at how quickly we were accommodated by the manager.
Our table of 7 consisted of 6 adults & 5 year young Zoe. Zoe despite her age, is quite a discerning eater – much like her parents – ordered quickly & was very satisfied with her kids breakfast. There were times when I had to stop myself from taking a sip of that delicious marshmallow milkshake she ordered! Milkshakes have no age limit 🙂

Before ordering we tried out the light medium roast coffees & they are certainly recommended if you enjoy coffee.

Coffee!

Coffee!

The comprehensive menu left us all spoilt for choice. There were various orders of omelettes, the Craft Breakfast, Breakfast Lasagne & healthy alternatives which my mates certainly enjoyed. I tried the Salmon Rosti & thoroughly enjoyed it! The portion was sufficient & it tasted as good as it looked!
My friend Katia tried the coconut flapjacks & raved on about how good they were.
I sampled my partner Sean’s choice which was the Scotch eggs & yum – definitely my next try!
Banting breakfasts, Eggs Florentine, French toast, Shakshouka, to name but a few, are all on this colourful menu list!

Breakfast!

Breakfast!!!

Without the sour, one can’t appreciate the sweet which brings me to negatives…parking in Parkhurst requires a great degree of patience!
The prices are a bit on the steep side.
Unfortunately due to the popularity of this hot spot, service was very slow & we waiting close to an hour for our breakfasts.
And lastly…I didn’t try the CandyFloss Milkshake or a slice of Oreo Cheesecake 😦

Until my next post, I agree with Robert Heinlein when he says, “one should not even attend the end of the world, without a good breakfast”!

Thursdays Thought

A little share with my readers on this beautiful Thursday…

I’ve tons of ideas & posts to share however am in the midst of settling into our new home & in a new city, with my lovely man & our three fur babies!

Watch this space as I share my experiences – Kwa-Zulu Natal girl goes to Jozi & now settling in Cape Town!

Until after all the unpacking a done 😉

Celebrations continue…

You now know I love celebrating…my birthday is one of the occasions I most look forward to each year, no matter how young 😉

It’s a time when I most profoundly reflect on the past, my relationships, my career, the highlights, the lowlights, my experiences & all the memories made.

Not only is the reflection on days gone by, however also on where I am at this moment in my life & the sheer excitement of what lies ahead!

My amazing partner thought I should begin my new year in Cape Town (our soon-to-be home) & on my special day I found myself staring at the ocean, taking in the sights, smells & sounds of this most vibrant city. Before I knew it, I was whisked away to The Twelve Apostles Hotel & Spa, for what I can only describe as celestial…

Upon arrival at this world class Spa, with international accolades longer than my arm, the pampering began!

The professionalism from my reception, to the change room, from choosing my music to interacting with my consultant, from one treatment to the next, was on another level!

My aromatherapy massage was divine & left me feeling invigorated yet totally relaxed. It is a treatment that I would recommend to anyone that wants to de stress & ease a bit of tension, or just feel pampered – anyone that wants the benefits of a massage but not necessarily with the intensity of a treatment such as a Deep Tissue massage as an example.

I was thrilled to see the Dermalogica range of products in the Spa – being a huge fan of the range – so I looked forward to facial treatment. An hour later after my chosen Aromatic Facial, my skin felt refreshed & hydrated. I felt like a proverbial “new woman” – pampered, light, refreshed & loved!

What a way to ring in my new year!

A light lunch followed at the Leopard Bar. We enjoyed the scrumptious cuisine (try the Oriental Platter for the not-so hungry but still substantial) out on the terrace with the most breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean & of course a few Pink Mojitos.

The Twelve Apostles certainly lives up to its known image – an incredibly stylish & sophisticated, one of its kind, world class Hotel & Spa,that is sure to impress even the most discerning visitor.

I continued to celebrate & take in the beauty that the Mother City has to offer by ending a most memorable birthday with dinner at The Bungalow Restaurant & Lounge in Clifton. The view, the ambiance, the food & drinks is summed up in one word – WOW

Food & drinks are fabulous. We ordered the sushi & wine (for me) & the calamari & craft beer (for my man) & neither disappointed!

The vibe was a lovely mix of clientele – groups of friends, colleagues, girls night out, families & couples.

The fashion is trendy, plain, stylish, comfortable, Choo or Havaianas! I didn’t feel over or under dressed in my summery Sissy Boy dress & heels (from Sissy Boy & Stuttafords). I added a touch of sparkle to my outfit with my stunning Swarovski necklace (available at Spilhaus) & ended off with a spritz of my favorite fragrance, Dolce by D&G (try Red Square), all spoils from my love – he certainly does have good taste (not biased at all) – maybe time to get him involved in my blog with a few notes on his suggestions for the perfect gifts, from a mans point of view.

Watching the sunset and toasting to another year of blessings & opportunity with a special person is a memory etched in my mind & one that I will no doubt be reflecting on at my next special day…

Until next time…Always remember life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away…

Racing against time in stilettos…

Dont you just feel like there are times in life when you can hear the tick tock of the giant clock that is life?

The tick tock reminding you of another year passing by, the tick tock to payday or the tick tock to the launch of that AW2015 collection (Woolworths have outdone themselves so make sure to check them out & whilst you on the lookout for stunning threads, dont forget to pop into Nicci Boutique)…

My race against time, (in my Christian Louboutins naturally – try Apsley Group for a pair) started late last year when I heard the tick tock of our (My love and our 3 furbabies) pending move to the awe that is the Mother City!

This is the very reason I share my first ever blog with you. Its something Ive always wanted to do, but just never got down to doing, until today. As I hear the tick tock, I realise, if not now, then when?!

Excited, nervous, happy, sad & scared are just some of the emotions that fill me when I think of this change in lanes.

I suddenly gained a new perspective on life and its length…clocks & watches too! (Visit Skagen to view their latest range in watches)

In my race against time I made a list of the places I must visit before the move & I hope to share my experiences with you after visiting them.

For now though, check out these hot spots in Jozi :

The Steamworks Gastropub

Social On Main

Beerhouse

Anti Est

Vicky Christinas

Craft

The Goodluck Club

This tick tock is something that every single one of us faces each day. I prefer to face it stilettos some days & other days, well just a pair of Chucks will do!

If you are racing this race too, keep moving & keep experiencing…
