Seat Safety – a blog for for the parents

Hello dear readers!

As you know, my blog includes anything that is of interest to me. So being involved in South African Motorsport and having a passion for 4 wheels I was recently informed by the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists on something rather disturbing – something I had to share with you, especially if you are parents!

Wheel Well, a NPO doing amazing work in road safety shared the following with us. All parents want to protect their children as best they can. When it comes to child car safety, the correct child car seat can seem rather expensive and some parents may be tempted to choose a cheaper alternative. This had led to thousands of unsuspecting parents across the globe purchasing inexpensive “portable” car seat harnesses online.

These “cheaper” options offer parents a false sense of security and do not
help to prevent injury or death. Wheel Well are anxious to inform parents of the hazards of using this kind of device instead of a proper child car seat which conforms to EU regulations.

Authorities in the United Kingdom have conducted crash tests on cheaply made and untested “portable” car seat harnesses and the results are sobering. These cheap imported seats were shown to disintegrate at a low-speed collision of under 60kph,
propelling a crash test dummy into the front of the vehicle.

To put this in perspective, a normal child car seat is tested to survive impacts at speeds in excess of 100kph. With the huge forces involved in a car crash, parents must ensure they purchase car seats that adhere to current and tested regulations and standards.

In South Africa, we adhere to European standards and the car seat must feature an orange European Economic Commission stamp of approval sticker. Parents need to be aware that any defects and shortcomings of a car seat will become apparent during a crash … and that will be far too late!

Prevent a lifetime of regret and make sure you buy the correct and legal seat for your child. If you cannot afford a correctly certified car seat new, rather be in contact with Wheel Well on peggie@wheelwell.co.za

Please consider donating your old car seats to Wheel Well and if you have a car seat but are unsure if it meets the requirements, contact Peggie and get peace of mind. Do feel free to share this with other parents out there – spread safety!

Utopia at the Mall of Africa

If heaven had a shopping center, I’d imagine it would look similar to the most talked about Mall in South Africa – The Mall of Africa

Today saw the fabulous opening of this anticipated mall with everything from sand art to celebrities, from Master Chef winning meals to renowned DJs and alluring fashion to queues of shoppers for kilometers.

This impressive shopping center boasts 130 000m2 of retail space, 2.4kms of shopping for every brand your heart desires, with a design, inspired from Africa’s geological features & iconic landscapes, leaves you in total awe!

Whether walking through the Forest Walk  Court (think Congos amazing rain forest), slowing down at the Desert Court (picture desert regions in North Africa), looking to relax at the Court of Great Lakes (imagine the Great Lakes of Africa), grabbing a glass of bubbly at the Champagne Bar at the Crystal Court (picture diamonds, crystals & precious minerals), or pampering at the Oleum Court (taking inspiration from trade & oil wealth in Africa), this prestigious Mall has something to suit each & every taste.

With 6500 parking bays & 24 entrances, finding the most loved & lusted after local & international brands makes this the ultimate shopping experience. Free wifi is sure to put smiles on every shoppers face (as it did to all bloggers & media today)  & the convenience of dedicated über pick up zones is certainly a win if like me, finding the prefect parking spot is always a challenge.

You will find this R5bn mall at Lone Creek & Magwa Crescent, Waterfall City in Midrand. Stores open from Monday to Saturday 9am to 8pm, Sundays & Public holidays 10am to 8pm. On that note, enjoy the long weekend shopping up a storm at the Mall of Africa & please share your thoughts on the experience & your latest purchases too with me here.

Whilst I drool over the latest at Zara Home, The Kooples and Armani Exchange, only 3 of the 300 stores at Mall of Africa, I’m thinking I like my money where I can see it..In my closet 😉

A new chapter begins

In a few hours I turn the page on an old chapter & begin writing a completely new one!
The past is never far away & will be by my side as I continue writing my new pages – the bad, the sad, the good & the blessed – to help me be the best version of me!
Excited, anxious, sad, elated are only a few of the emotions I’ve been feeling for days now. Occasions are incredibly special to me – Birthdays especially!

They are a time of reflection for me. I think back to last year, my first birthday spent in CT whilst holidaying. This year though as a permanent resident of the beautiful Mother City.
It’s truly been a roller coaster year!

Studies, entrepreneurship, goodbyes, hellos, feelings of hopelessness & helplessness, love, loss of my special baby Larry, fear, failure, excitement, lessons learned & accomplishment – The life I live, the life I love!

On a personal level, I’ve always nurtured & treasured relationships but the passed year has shown me just how important it is to do so. My special day without those I love so dearly watching down on me, my family & my extended family of friends who won’t be here to party with me or wish me in person, the treasured hug from my dearest niece & mums kiss & birthday cooking (we celebrate our birthdays a day apart) all evoke bittersweet emotions – and in the same breath I’m so blessed to have my love Sean right beside me on yet another special moment in my life…What remains with me year after year, never taking people & time for granted…

On a professional level it’s been anything but easy – it’s being trying & challenging, many tears & many times I’ve wanted to turn the blank page over but I’ve vowed to take this new year I’m blessed with & put in more, take more risks & grab every opportunity presented, no matter how little or large! In my quest to be my best version of me I’m no longer afraid to ask for advice & for help. Along the way I continue to meet inspiring people & will continue to value them.

So as I get ready to write my first line of my new chapter I vow to be true to myself no matter what, to throw kindness around like confetti, to keep in mind that the opinions of others do not define me, to remind myself each day to be proud of the woman aspiring to be the best version of herself, to live, to love & to be unapologetically ME!

#YouChoose

This morning I felt a bit bleh! Homesick, missing family, friends & familiarity…

I then thought about a story that had been told to me when I was in school – A Native American Cherokee Story : Two Wolves

One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all.

“One is Evil – It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

“The other is Good – It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?”

The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

Can one simply choose to be happy?

I believe whether consciously or on a subconscious level, we have that power…I’d love to hear your thoughts?

Thursdays Thought

A little share with my readers on this beautiful Thursday…

I’ve tons of ideas & posts to share however am in the midst of settling into our new home & in a new city, with my lovely man & our three fur babies!

Watch this space as I share my experiences – Kwa-Zulu Natal girl goes to Jozi & now settling in Cape Town!

Until after all the unpacking a done 😉

Shear delight!

Experiment all you want, your tresses will grow back 😉 It’s been something I’ve always said & certainly still believe.

Through the years I’ve gone from the short tomboy look – longing for tresses; to long “spiral curls” (giving away my age here); to the only red head in my family!

I’ve had experimental bits of blonde; an incredibly deep winter violet; sleek jet black & most recently an unintentional ombré!

Currently I’m au naturale – but longing for some highlights!

I also believe that my relationship with my stylist is a personal affair – there’s an amount of trust placed in him/her. Having not been to a stylist in a long time I called up Daleen, a stylist that had been with Gary Rom for years but due to impending closure at her branch, had now moved to the renowned PHD Hairdressing in the trendy suburb of Greenside, Johannesburg.

From the second I got to the front door & was greeted by name & ushered inside (to me the small things matter), I already felt at home at PHD!

Stylish setting

It was agreed, the plan of action was a side fringe & a desperately needed trim. I enjoy Daleen being my stylist as she never imposes her will on me. She listens & gives me expert advice however the end decision is always mine!

As I settled at the wash room I enjoyed the music, lighting & sights of 5th Avenue. I had my hair washed which followed conditioning & a luxuriating massage.

When I got to the stylists chair I was ready for a delicious cappuccino & for my eagerly awaited do.

Sights of 5th Avenue

The end result was what I would call alluring! I loved the style, the shine & just the way it made me feel!

Daleen & a happy client

Daleen & a happy client

I’m a sucker for good nourishment so my eye caught the Kevin Murphy range of products. I enquired on this Australian brand & the toss up was between Redken & the Kevin Murphy Plumping Line…the little bunny logo proudly announcing that every supplier of every product used in this brand was not tested on animals got my absolute vote! I’ve used it a few times & I’m hooked!

So whilst this is not a sponsored blog, if you’re in need of a good hairstylist I can certainly recommend PHD & specifically Daleen!

If you are fussy in terms of what products you use, try the range from Kevin Murphy, you will truly enjoy it!

If not take a look at the website for something you may enjoy as they stock everything from Tangle Teezer to Veaudry to name a few brands, and even have the great brand Bluebeards Revenge if you’d like to spoil your man!

I’d love to hear your thoughts on PHD if you’ve been there or your favs & not-so-favs…lets share those hair stories lovelies!

So until my next blog remember that life’s too short for a bad hair day!

Loving the look!

My #OOTD was Jeans & White collared shirt both Guess from Stuttafords. Socialite jersey from the Free range at Edgars. OTK Aldo Black boots (a must have for Jozi winters). Canary yellow Bag & accessories by Colette Hayman. MU by MAC

We learned about the importance of having defined eyebrows and contrary to some belief, that it doesn’t have to cost a fortune to have them.

The Billion Dollar Brow range was so impressive – I wanted to get two of everything!

However if I was forced to choose just two products …

My first would be the top selling Universal Brow Pencil. This self-sharpening pencil, which suits all colors & skin tones, blends in beautifully with your natural brows

Second would definitely be the Brow Boost Gel. This conditioning gel strengthens thin brows with a visible difference in just 30 days!

Take a look at their website for a full range of the products, you won’t be disappointed…

From the Brow Buddy (available in pink *happy dance*) to Brow Powders, the most fabulous Tweezers to sexy Glitter Brow Gels, the Billion Dollar Brows range is a must have for yourself & would make a great gift for your bestie too!
